EU project launch: "SUNGATE" - A novel technology platform for the carbon-neutral production of solar fuels
2023-11-29 12:36:38, Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems IMM In the midst of the energy transition and advancing climate change, solar fuels are a sustainable solution for an environmentally friendly energy supply, for example for mobility, households and industry. Artificial photosynthesis is a promising approach for solar fuel production - however, current systems are inefficient, expensive and unsuitable for industrial use. The EU project "SUNGATE" aims to overcome these limitations by combining the principles of artificial photosynthesis with new methods of photoelectrocatalysis and micro-process engineering for flow reactors. As a result, the project will produce the first modular, continuous microreactor technology that uses sunlight as the sole energy source and water and CO2 as simple and abundant feedstocks for conversion into solar fuels such as methanol and formate.
