DESCRIPTION
The MSD (Mega Speed Dynamometer) system is designed to test rotating systems with very high speeds (e.g. BLDCs motors, dental handpiece, air turbines and surgical tools). The braking action is based on eddy currents induced on an aluminum disc mounted directly on the shaft of the DUT (Device Under Test).
Torque is measured smoothly by a reaction torque sensor mounted below the test stand surface. Due to the thermal effect on the disk, the MSD is not suitable for endurance testing, but it can be used to create a quick curve or for point-to-point testing. An infrared sensor monitors the temperature of the pane and stops the test if it overheats. The pulley can be sized or adjusted according to the motor parameters.
The system is non-contact, so alignment is not critical. As a result, the system has very low inertia and thus no residual or drag torque (less influence on test parameters). The speed limitation is given by the tested motor and its ability to drive the pulley. Systems have already been produced that reach speeds of 380,000 min-1.
To achieve the best possible results, each MSD system is tailored to the characteristics and performance of the elements under test. There are standard attachments for motor mounts or dental devices.
Air pressure sensors are optionally available. The system provides 2 analog outputs and 6 ±10 VDC inputs (configurable for speed, torque, pressure, etc.). Calibration weights and arms (included) and a software routine facilitate regular calibration.
The MSD system allows testing of dental handpieces and motors according to ISO 14457. It confirms Magtrol's expertise in testing high speed applications and is an ideal complement to the WB 23 & WB 27 Dynamometers, which can be used to test motors up to 100 000 min-1 with a rated torque of 80 mN-m (resp. 150 mN-m).
