Smart cameras

A distinction is generally made between smart cameras – also called intelligent vision cameras – and vision sensors. The basic design is the same for both of the vision systems for image processing. Both systems operate autonomously, i.e., independently of a PC. The main difference between a smart camera and a vision sensor is the software. With vision sensors, the software is optimised for simpler image processing applications. Smart cameras, on the other hand, can be programmed for specific requirements. Many manufacturers offer application libraries for smart cameras. The result of the image analysis is digital information. This is output to higher-level systems via switching outputs or interfaces.
